Cappadocia

Cappadocia, in central Turkey is one of the most unique places one can visit. It is known for large rock formations called “Fairy Chimneys” that are used as houses by the people of the region. It is also a region filled with “underground cities” used by early Christians to avoid persecution from the Romans.

How to Get Here

One can fly to the Cappadocia region from Istanbul, but we were able to visit this region as part of a two week tour of Turkey which included stops in other places mentioned in this website.

Things to See and Do

This region is rich with natural and man-made things to see. We visited in the winter which adds the beauty of white snow to the usually barren environment.

Underground Cities

Several underground cities dating to as old as 8th-7th centuries BC can be found in the Cappadocia region. These cities reach hundreds of meters underground but tours will only take you to only a few rooms of these fascinating places.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

If you’re only going to take one hot air balloon ride in your life. Arguably, the place to take it is in Cappadocia. These rides cost a few hundred dollars for just around an hour but it is totally worth it here in Cappadocia.

The balloons take a few minutes to fully inflate.

Dozens of balloons take flight at the same time at the break of dawn.

The ride gets exciting as the pilot takes you only a few meters from the rock formations.

The contrast of the barren landscape and the colorful balloons makes even cellphone photos postcard-worthy.

An expansive view of snow-covered Cappadocia

The ride is concluded with a traditional bottle of Champagne.

Goreme and Fairy Chimneys

Goreme is an outdoor museum of an ancient city carved out of the rocks of Cappadocia. Inside some of the “caves” are beautiful early Christian frescoes.

Tips and Tricks

  • Treat yourself to a Hot Air Balloon Ride – you will not regret it.
  • Probably easiest to visit this area as part of a group tour. We found the time allotted to be more than enough and the tour didn’t feel rushed.
  • If you’re visiting in the winter, keep in mind that Cappadocia is a mountainous area and is below freezing (despite the rest of Turkey having relatively mild weather).
  • Smaller children might not enjoy the hot air balloon ride as they might not be able to see anything as the Gondola has high walls and crowded with adults.
  • Take A TON of Photos.
